What is MCX?
The Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX) is India’s first listed commodity exchange. It facilitates online trading of commodity futures, meaning buyers and sellers can trade contracts based on the future price of commodities like gold, silver, crude oil, and agricultural products.

Market Sessions
MCX operates in two sessions every trading day:
1. Morning Session:
- Start Time: 9:00 AM IST
- End Time: 5:00 PM IST
- Applicable for: All commodities, including agricultural ones.
- Key Focus: Daytime trading for both retail and institutional traders. Agricultural commodities generally stop trading at this time.
2. Evening Session:
- Start Time: 5:00 PM IST
- End Time:
- 11:30 PM IST (Standard closing)
- 11:55 PM IST (During U.S. Daylight Saving Time – March to November)
- 11:30 PM IST (Standard closing)
The extended closing time aligns MCX’s trading hours with global markets, especially the U.S. markets, which influence the prices of metals and energy commodities.
Why Two Sessions?
- To accommodate both domestic and international markets
- Many commodities, especially metals and energy products, follow international price trends, primarily set in the U.S. and Europe.
- The evening session allows Indian traders to respond to global news and price movements.
