When you think of crispy, golden fried chicken, it’s hard not to think of Kentucky Fried Chicken, better known as KFC. But few know the deep-fried backstory of this global fast-food icon, which began humbly in the midst of the Great Depression.

The Man Behind the Chicken: Colonel Harland Sanders

The journey of KFC starts with Harland Sanders, a man who was not a military colonel but was given the honorary title by the state of Kentucky in 1936. Before becoming a culinary legend, Sanders held various jobs as a steamboat pilot, insurance salesman, and gas station operator.

In 1930, during the Great Depression, he began serving meals to travelers from a small service station in Corbin, Kentucky. Sanders didn’t have a restaurant at first, just a dining table in the back of the gas station. Yet, people kept coming mostly for his unique recipe of fried chicken prepared using 11 herbs and spices, the formula that remains a closely guarded secret even today.

The Recipe That Changed Everything

Sanders perfected his chicken recipe by using a pressure fryer, which allowed chicken to be cooked quickly while still retaining that crispy texture. The innovation was revolutionary at the time and became a cornerstone of the KFC experience.

He called it “finger-lickin’ good” and it stuck.

Franchising the Idea

In 1952, at the age of 62, Sanders began franchising his fried chicken recipe. The first franchise was opened in Salt Lake City, Utah, by a man named Pete Harman. His sales tripled, proving the formula had wide appeal.

By 1964, there were more than 600 KFC franchises across the United States. That same year, Sanders sold the company for $2 million (around $20 million today), though he remained the face of KFC for years.

KFC Goes Global

KFC became one of the first American fast-food brands to expand internationally. The first overseas outlet opened in England in 1965, followed by expansions into Mexico, Australia, and Jamaica.

Today, KFC operates in over 145 countries and territories with more than 25,000 outlets, making it one of the most recognized and successful fast-food chains on Earth.

Legacy of the Colonel

Despite selling the brand, Colonel Sanders continued to tour restaurants, greet customers, and critique food well into his 80s. His image white suit, black tie, and goatee remains iconic. Even decades after his passing in 1980, Sanders remains synonymous with Southern hospitality and comfort food.
