Roronoa Zoro, the powerful swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates in One Piece, is known for his mastery of the Three-Sword Style (Santoryu), and one of his most iconic swords during a major part of the series was Shusui (秋水) a black blade with deep historical and symbolic significance.
What Is Shusui?
Shusui is one of the 21 Great Grade swords (Ō Wazamono), making it one of the strongest swords in the world of One Piece. It is a black blade (Kokutō), meaning it has been permanently blackened through many intense battles, making it incredibly durable and powerful.

Origin and History
Shusui originally belonged to the legendary samurai Ryuma of the Wano Country. Ryuma was revered as a national hero in Wano, known for slaying a dragon and being one of the most powerful swordsmen of his time.
After Ryuma’s death, his body was buried with Shusui in Wano. However, during Gecko Moria’s storyline in Thriller Bark, Ryuma’s corpse was reanimated using the shadow of Brook, and he wielded Shusui once again.
How Did Zoro Get Shusui?
During the Thriller Bark Arc, Zoro fought the zombie version of Ryuma in a duel. Impressed by Zoro’s strength, Ryuma acknowledged him as a worthy swordsman and gifted him Shusui after being defeated.
From that point on, Shusui became one of Zoro’s primary swords and replaced his destroyed sword, Yubashiri.
Shusui’s Powers and Abilities
Shusui greatly enhanced Zoro’s combat abilities due to its legendary qualities:
- Incredible Durability: Shusui is nearly indestructible, allowing Zoro to block and attack with devastating force.
- Increased Cutting Power: It made Zoro’s attacks heavier and more powerful, especially his slashes and techniques like “Shi Shishi Sonson” and “Hiryu: Kaen.”

However, Zoro noted that Shusui’s immense weight required more control and adaptation compared to his previous swords.
Shusui’s Return to Wano
When the Straw Hat crew reached Wano Country, Shusui became a focal point. The people of Wano were outraged to see Zoro wielding it, as they considered it a sacred national treasure tied to their hero Ryuma.
To avoid further conflict and out of respect, Zoro eventually agreed to return Shusui to Ryuma’s grave.
In exchange, he received Enma, the legendary sword that once belonged to Kozuki Oden, the only man to scar Kaido, one of the Four Emperors.

Shusui played a crucial role in Zoro’s development:
