June 16, 2025 — Twitter, now known as X, is set to introduce new privacy controls that will allow users to manage who can add them to group chats. The update comes in response to growing complaints about unsolicited and spam-filled group messages on the platform.
The issue gained renewed attention after blockchain investigator ZachXBT posted a screenshot of his message requests, which were filled with group chats promoting suspicious cryptocurrency schemes under titles such as “Absolutely safe smart mining” and “USDT currency mining.”
In his post, ZachXBT called on Twitter to implement a filter allowing users to control who can invite them to group chats, stating that currently, “any user can add you to a group unless you turn off your messages entirely.”
Elon Musk, who owns and leads the platform, responded directly to the request. “Will do. Thanks for the feedback,” Musk replied via tweet, effectively confirming that the feature will be added in an upcoming update.
The promised change would provide users with more granular control over their messaging experience, potentially reducing exposure to spam and scams. Currently, the only way to avoid such messages is to disable direct messages from non-followers entirely, a measure many consider too restrictive.
No specific timeline has been given for when the new filter will be implemented, but Musk’s direct acknowledgement suggests that it may be prioritized in the near term.
The platform has recently come under scrutiny for its handling of user privacy and spam content, especially as scammers and bots continue to exploit messaging features to target users.
The forthcoming update is expected to improve the platform’s user experience and safety, particularly for high-profile accounts and those in the cryptocurrency and financial sectors who are frequent targets of such scams.
Twitter has not yet issued an official statement or release detailing the changes.
