T.J. Maxx Store Closures in 2026: Updated List of Locations Shutting Down

T.J. Maxx is making changes to its store network in 2026, with several locations closing despite the company’s continued expansion across the United States. The latest shutdowns involve established stores in Massachusetts and Maryland, including two locations that had served their communities for approximately a decade.

The closures come as parent company TJX Companies continues to operate thousands of stores under brands such as Marshalls, HomeGoods, HomeSense, and Sierra.

Which T.J. Maxx Stores Have Closed in 2026?

Among the locations affected this year is the three-story T.J. Maxx store at 360 Newbury Street in Boston. The store ended operations on January 5, following nearly 10 years at the location.

A Massachusetts WARN notice confirmed that the closure affected 117 employees. Most of the workers were reportedly offered opportunities to transfer to other nearby stores.

Another shutdown took place at the Ellsworth Place mall in Silver Spring, Maryland. After operating for around 10 years, the store closed, affecting approximately 60 employees.

Cumberland, Maryland, is also included in the list of reported closures for 2026.

Why Is T.J. Maxx Closing Some Locations?

The individual shutdowns do not necessarily indicate that T.J. Maxx is struggling financially. Retail companies regularly reconsider their property portfolios, particularly when certain locations become less suitable for their long-term plans.

Elizabeth Lafontaine, an executive at retail foot-traffic analytics company Placer.ai, explained that expanding chains often need to reconsider where and how they operate stores. Selecting locations that match customer demand and the appropriate store format can involve closing existing outlets while opening others elsewhere.

T.J. Maxx has also described its closure decisions as part of its regular real estate review process.

This approach allows retailers to adjust their physical presence while continuing to pursue growth in other markets.

TJX Continues to Expand Despite Store Shutdowns

The parent company has maintained a long record of comparable sales growth. According to First Business magazine, TJX recorded 34 consecutive years of comparable sales increases, demonstrating the company’s sustained performance through changing economic conditions.

Gregg Schwartz, founder of Overstock Trader, has also highlighted the company’s expansion ambitions. TJX operates thousands of stores worldwide and has raised its long-term store-count target to 7,500.

Schwartz views closures in expensive markets as part of a broader effort to allocate resources toward locations with greater potential for growth.

Off-price retail has also continued attracting shoppers interested in discounted products. Lafontaine noted that the combination of value and the in-store shopping experience has helped this retail category maintain customer traffic.

However, the sector is not completely protected from economic pressures. Consumers becoming more selective about nonessential purchases could affect spending patterns in the coming months.

What Could Happen to T.J. Maxx’s Store Network Next?

Industry observers expect TJX to continue adjusting its physical locations rather than reducing its overall presence. Older stores in expensive urban areas could face further reviews, while suburban communities and secondary markets may attract new investment.

This would allow the retailer to adapt its store network to changing customer preferences and operating costs.

For shoppers, the distinction is important: individual store closures do not automatically mean the company is pulling back from a particular state or the wider U.S. market.
