An 81-year-old man from Texas, who has been putting in exhausting hours delivering misplaced luggage in order to help pay for his wife’s cancer treatment, has become the focus of a viral fundraising campaign, only for the campaign to be suddenly discontinued by GoFundMe after it had raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Donald Johnson, who lives in The Colony which is situated north of Dallas, has been working for the past three years as a freelance contractor retrieving misrouted airline bags for passengers. He accepted the job since he had had difficulty in finding other employment at his age, with the aim of meeting the increasing medical expenses for his wife, Josephine Johnson, who is suffering from pancreatic cancer. The two of them have been married for 57 years.
The Doorbell Video That Brought National Attention
Johnson’s story received national attention when a doorbell camera recorded him having difficulty carrying a heavy suitcase up a steep flight of stairs as he was making a delivery to Erin Howell’s house. When Howell came outside to offer her help, she realised why he was still working at that hour. Being touched by his situation, she launched a GoFundMe campaign titled “Help Don Retire” and posted the video on TikTok using the handle @HelpDonRetire.
