A tragic accident which took place on a fifth-grade field trip in Johnson County, Iowa, has resulted in the death of a young teacher and her 10-year-old student. The victims have been officially identified as Hannah Jorgensen, 24, of Tiffin, and Ahmed Osman, 10, of Iowa City, both of whom were part of the Borlaug Elementary School community. Their bodies were found at the Coralville Reservoir near Lake Macbride on Tuesday and Wednesday as a result of a difficult search and rescue mission.
What Happened at Lake Macbride
The event took place on Tuesday, 22nd September 2026, as part of an educational trip known as the ‘School of the Wild’ which was arranged by the Iowa City Community School District. This programme, carried out in cooperation with the University of Iowa, involves taking the students to the MacBride Nature Recreation Area for practical environmental education.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office received a call at about 12:30 p.m. to the spillway at the Coralville Reservoir since people had been reported in the water. The first emergency personnel to arrive quickly found and retrieved the body of Hannah Jorgensen, a fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary, who was declared dead at the scene.
A search was immediately started for the 10-year-old boy who was missing. More than 24 hours later, the divers retrieved Ahmed Osman’s body from the reservoir on Wednesday afternoon; he too was declared dead.
Community Mourns Two “Deeply Valued” Lives
In a moving statement, the Iowa City Community School District conveyed the depth of its sorrow. “Hannah and Ahmed were highly regarded as part of our school district community, and the effect of their loss is being felt all over Borlaug and throughout the district,” the district stated. “We are sending our sympathies to their families and loved ones, as well as to Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and to everybody who knew them and cared for them.”
At Borlaug Elementary, counselors and support staff have been provided so that the students and staff can deal with the tragedy. The district has stressed that its main concern is attending to the school community during this “extraordinarily painful time”.
Hannah Jorgensen, who was a much-loved teacher in the fifth grade, was known for her dedication and kindness. Ahmed Osman, a fifth-grader at Borlaug, was regarded by his friends and family as a bright and nice child. Events and community meetings have already started to pay tribute to their memories.

Governor and State Leaders Offer Condolences
On Wednesday evening Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds made a statement in which she described the tragedy as “unimaginable”. “We are very saddened to hear about the disaster at Lake Macbride,” she said. “Kevin and I would like to extend our most sincere sympathies to the families of Hannah Jorgensen and Ahmed Osman and are asking the people of Iowa to join us in prayer so that they may find comfort and healing during this tough period.”
The governor also expressed his thanks to the first responders and members of the law enforcement for the professionalism and compassion they showed during the search and recovery operations.
Investigation Underway; School of the Wild Program Paused
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is currently conducting an active investigation into the way in which both victims entered the water, and authorities have not given any details about the exact circumstances because the inquiry is still ongoing.
As a result of the tragedy, the University of Iowa has temporarily halted its School of the Wild programme while a review is carried out. The Iowa City Community School District has likewise canceled all the field trips which are scheduled for the programme.
A Community United in Grief
